My partners in our “kids” business often say that the formula behind their success

92 branches worldwide and explosive revenue growth in just 2 years is discipline.

For myself, I define discipline as the ability to follow the plan and not drop out halfway, but actually reach the goal. Oh, that sweet word discipline.

And there is a lot in it about personal boundaries.

What “quitting” looks like in real life

My usual pattern looks like this. The goal is clear, the steps are broken down into tasks, everything is neatly entered into a tracker, the structure is there, the plan is there.

Then the day starts. And SHE appears procrastination.

Instead of key tasks I:

• reply to all messages

• write a bunch of my own

• do lots of small errands

• and never really get to the one thing that actually moves the needle.

There can be many reasons for this, very different ones. Today I want to focus on another question so what do we do about it?

My way not to quit: other people and the “good girl” effect

I noticed that when I fill my calendar with meetings and calls, I work much more effectively. Simply because there is another person on the other side. Even if I am late, I will still show up. It turned out to be very important for me not to let someone down.

And I realised something else about myself it matters a lot to me to be a “good girl” in someone else’s eyes. You can work on this for a long time in a therapist’s office.

I decided to first use this “special feature” to my advantage and:

• tie my tasks to important tasks of my team members

  also a great way to delegate responsibility, by the way, if you want more on this topic I can unpack it in a separate piece

• commit in front of my partners

• actually show up in formats like focus rooms and productivity sessions

A mastermind for entrepreneurs instead of a personal supervisor

More than once I have had the thought maybe I should hire a person whose only job is to be online with me during my deep work hours. We would agree on a time, jump on a Zoom call, sit there and simply work. Not because “I am so motivated by this Excel file”, but because “I promised I would show up and do it”.
